AMD reported third-quarter revenue of $13.38 billion, up 45% from a year earlier and above the $13.09 billion analysts expected, according to LSEG estimates cited by CNBC. Adjusted earnings were $2.09 a share, compared with expectations of $1.95. AMD shares rose 8% in extended trading after the results.

Data center revenue nearly doubled year over year and accounted for 64% of AMD’s total sales, up from 47% a year earlier. The company did not give a separate dollar figure for the segment in the supplied results. CEO Lisa Su said data center processor growth would “accelerate further” and told analysts that demand was just beginning to build as companies deploy AI agents.

## AI demand lifts one part of the business

The results point to a shift in what is driving AMD’s growth. The company has spent years competing with Nvidia in AI graphics processors, but CNBC reports that demand for AMD server CPUs is also rising. Those chips can power the virtual machines used by agent-based applications, which may run tasks for extended periods.

AMD also sells data center GPUs and Helios rack-scale systems, which compete with Nvidia systems. Meta, Microsoft, Anthropic, OpenAI and Oracle are beginning to use Helios in their data centers, according to CNBC. Meta said its Helios racks are running. AMD has also agreed to invest $1 billion in Meta’s equity offering.

## A strong forecast, with weaker PC and gaming sales

AMD expects about $17 billion in fourth-quarter revenue, above the $16.2 billion average analyst estimate. It forecast a 55% gross margin, slightly below the 55.3% estimate cited by StreetAccount. Su said the company expected no difficulty meeting demand, though she has separately said AMD plans to substantially increase supply in 2027.

Not every part of the business is growing. AMD’s combined PC and gaming segment brought in $3.7 billion, down 8% from a year earlier; gaming revenue fell 40%. The PC market is also under pressure: Counterpoint Research said global shipments declined 4% in the second quarter amid rising memory and component costs. Intel, another major maker of PC processors, recently reported data center growth but warned about its outlook and ability to meet demand.

## The facts

- AMD reported third-quarter revenue of $13.38 billion, up 45% year over year.
- Adjusted earnings were $2.09 per share, versus LSEG’s $1.95 estimate.
- Data center revenue nearly doubled and represented 64% of AMD’s total revenue, compared with 47% a year earlier.
- AMD forecast about $17 billion in fourth-quarter revenue, above the $16.2 billion analyst average cited by LSEG.
- The combined PC and gaming segment generated $3.7 billion, down 8% year over year; gaming revenue fell 40%.

## Why it matters

For companies building data centers, AMD’s results show that its processors and Helios systems are gaining use alongside Nvidia’s products, giving buyers another supplier to consider. AMD forecasts higher revenue next quarter, but the results do not say whether that growth will lower prices or make computing capacity easier to obtain.
