A Gartner survey of 2,002 CIOs and other technology leaders found that only 13% reported major or transformative returns from AI. The findings were presented at the Gartner IT Symposium in Orlando.

The survey also found that 58% of CIOs are tasked with finding cost savings through AI, while 51% expect AI to increase their technology stack’s operating costs. Gartner analyst Alicia Mullery said companies need to choose projects carefully and be ready to stop projects that aren’t delivering.

## The facts

- Gartner surveyed 2,002 CIOs and other technology leaders.
- Only 13% reported major or transformative returns from AI.

## Why it matters

For CIOs under pressure to cut costs, the results suggest that AI projects may add to technology spending before producing returns; the survey does not establish why individual projects succeed or fail.
