Google plans to turn off its AI products for K–12 student accounts unless school administrators explicitly enable them. The company announced the change on November 3, 2026, after consulting schools, teachers, researchers and policymakers. It covers Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search.

There is a catch for schools that want to block AI but keep ordinary web searching. TechCrunch reports that Google education chief Chris Phillips told The New York Times that Search and AI are “deeply integrated.” Under the announced approach, students at a school that disables the products could see a message saying Search is unavailable too. TechCrunch says schools that keep Search will have to accept its AI features.

Google says it will share more details in the coming months, before the changes roll out. TechCrunch reports the change is planned for next year. Google has not yet explained exactly what controls administrators will get or how schools can manage access to Search separately.

## Guided Learning comes to classrooms

Google is also adding Guided Learning, a tool designed to coach students through problems rather than give them an answer straight away. Starting November 3, 2026, it is globally available in Google Classroom for activities assigned by a teacher. Google says it uses class materials to keep students focused and gives teachers real-time insights into where students may need help.

A separate Search version is being tested in select U.S. schools later in November. When it detects a student seeking homework help, Google says it can offer prompts and step-by-step guidance—for example, on a physics problem or book report—instead of jumping directly to an answer. Google says its research found measurable learning gains with Guided Learning, but it did not provide figures in the announcement.

## The facts

- Google announced the school-account controls update on November 3, 2026.
- The change covers Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search.
- Guided Learning became globally available in Google Classroom on November 3, 2026.
- Google plans to pilot Guided Learning in Search at select U.S. schools later in November.

## Why it matters

For school administrators, opting out of Google’s AI tools may also mean giving students up Google Search, according to TechCrunch. That could affect how schools set classroom technology rules; the exact controls and whether Search can be managed separately are not yet clear.
