Google plans to turn off Search, along with its AI products, for K–12 student accounts unless school administrators explicitly enable them. The policy drew criticism from U.S. politicians and former Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan, who said the link could pressure schools to adopt AI. Google announced the changes on November 3, 2026; it has not yet said when they will take effect.

Google says the change gives schools more control: access to Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Search will be off by default. In a post responding to the backlash, the company said schools could turn on the products individually. But Google education chief Chris Phillips told The New York Times that Search and AI are “deeply integrated,” and that students at schools that do not opt in to AI tools will not have access to Search. TechCrunch reported that explanation.

## Why are critics concerned?

Sen. Bernie Sanders called the plan “extortion,” while Sen. Richard Blumenthal said Google seemed more focused on putting Gemini in schools than helping students succeed. Khan argued that the move showed the risk of a company controlling an essential service. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also criticized Google’s power over how schools teach. These are critics’ assessments; Google says its changes respond to educators who want more control over AI.

The dispute matters because many students use Chromebooks and Google’s school services, TechCrunch notes, making a switch to another search engine less straightforward. Some educators are also concerned that AI-generated summaries could discourage students from finding answers themselves. Google says it is developing Guided Learning in Search to help students work through problems step by step rather than simply receive an answer.

## What else is changing?

Google says it will begin testing Guided Learning in Search at select U.S. schools later in November, then expand to other districts in the coming months. In Google Classroom, the feature became globally available on November 3. There, students can use it for activities assigned by a teacher, and teachers can see where students may need extra help, according to Google.

The company says it will share more details about the new school controls in the coming months so administrators can prepare. Until it does, schools do not have a confirmed date for when the opt-in policy will reach student accounts.

## The facts

- Google announced the school product changes on November 3, 2026.
- Google says Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Search will be off by default for K–12 student accounts until administrators turn them on.
- Google says Guided Learning in Search will be piloted in select U.S. schools later in November.
- Google says Guided Learning became globally available in Google Classroom on November 3.

## Why it matters

For students whose schools rely on Google’s services, the policy could mean losing access to Search if administrators do not enable it. Google has not announced when the controls will roll out, so schools’ timing and options remain unclear.
