# Shopify lets browser AI agents finish checkout

Shopify says browser-based AI agents can now do more than search its merchants’ stores and fill a shopping cart: they can complete checkout, including through Shop Pay. The update was announced on Sept. 28 and is rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants.

The change is aimed at agents working inside a shopper’s browser. With the buyer’s authorization, an agent can read the checkout, make changes and submit the order. Shopify says its tools let agents do this without relying on screenshots or scraping web pages.

## What can the agents do?

Shopify added three tools: get_checkout, update_checkout and complete_checkout. They let an agent inspect checkout details, change information such as a delivery address or shipping option, and place the order after the buyer approves it.

The tools use WebMCP, a proposed standard for connecting AI agents to websites through a browser. Shopify says the tools are designed to provide accurate shopping details and required disclosures, and to hand control back when needed.

## How this fits Shopify’s plans

Shopify already has a hosted MCP server for agents that connect directly to its systems rather than operating in a shopper’s browser. Both approaches use the company’s Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, a shared way to handle product discovery, carts and checkout.

Some retailers, including Amazon and apparently Adidas, have blocked AI agents from buying on users’ behalf. Shopify is opening the door instead. The company already has direct commerce partnerships with AI agents Muse and Instinct; it announced the Instinct partnership on Monday.
