Venture‑capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) released its seventh Top 100 consumer AI ranking. It adds US credit‑card spending data from YipitData to show who actually pays for AI. Only 4.5 % of Americans had a paid ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude subscription in August 2026, up from about half that a year earlier. The top 1 % of payers, averaging $900 per month, account for almost 20 % of all observed AI spending, while the typical paying user spends about $25.

ChatGPT leads both web traffic and paid subscriptions, followed by Gemini and Claude. Claude overtook Gemini in paid US subscribers in March 2026 and now competes neck‑and‑neck after Google’s June pricing change. The spending data highlights a small, high‑spending “prosumers” group that uses AI for building, design and professional work.

Why it matters

The concentration of AI revenue in a tiny high‑spending segment shows that most users remain free or low‑pay, limiting broad monetization and widening the skill gap.
