AbridgeKV shrinks reasoning-model cache to one quarter

The researchers report that AbridgeKV preserves accuracy and output length with 75% less generated-token cache on a 446-problem test.

AbridgeKV is a method for compressing the memory cache used while language models generate long reasoning chains. In a paper posted on arXiv on October 16, 2026, its authors describe training models to summarize completed text blocks into a few learned pause tokens, then discard the blocks’ original cache entries.

On 446 competition problems, the authors report that retaining one quarter of the generated cache matched an identically trained full-cache model’s accuracy and output length. They also report a cache 3.5 times smaller per sequence in vLLM and 3.2 times faster problem completion on a saturated H100; the supplied abstract does not give the scores or identify independent validation.

Why it matters

For teams serving long reasoning tasks, the reported cache reduction could mean more sequences fit in memory, but the abstract does not establish performance beyond its competition-problem tests.
