AI tools let users strip ads and bloatware from smart TVs

Open‑source projects like dumbtv and cleanyourtv use AI agents to remove sponsored ads and unused apps from Android‑based TVs.

Developers have released open‑source scripts that let anyone use an AI assistant such as Claude Code to clean up a smart TV. The tools, called “dumbtv” and “cleanyourtv,” connect to the TV over Wi‑Fi, delete pre‑installed apps, replace the launcher and turn off tracking features. They work on Android/Google TV platforms from brands like Sony, TCL, Xiaomi and Fire TV without needing root access. Users report faster navigation and a home screen that looks more like Apple TV.

Why it matters

Consumers can regain control of their TVs, avoiding unwanted ads and data collection.
