Amazon Web Services chief Matt Garman posted a 3,000‑word warning on October 2, 2026. He says that if local opposition stops new data‑center builds, the United States could lose about $68 billion in economic value. He links that loss to weaker AI development, which he says could hurt national security and the country’s competitive edge.

Why the data‑center push matters

Garman compares AI’s impact to that of the Internet and modern transport, saying the technology will shape the economy for decades. He argues that the U.S. must keep building data‑center capacity now to stay ahead of rivals such as China and Europe.

Amazon’s community plan

The company introduced a “Built Together” program. It promises $1 billion in community investments to help towns that host new data‑center projects. The pledge is meant to address concerns about noise, traffic, and power use, and to encourage local support for the builds.

Why it matters

If new data centers are delayed, the United States could fall behind in AI, which may affect jobs, tech services, and national security. Amazon’s $1 billion fund aims to make hosting a data center more attractive to local communities, but it remains unclear how many projects will actually move forward.
