System76 has updated the COSMIC desktop project’s contribution rules to bar AI-generated code, comments, documentation and submission descriptions. Contributors must certify that they have not included material generated by a large language model, or LLM—an AI system that generates text and code.
GNOME has similar restrictions in some projects, but developer Michael Catanzaro argues that it should accept AI-generated bug reports, including reports that may help uncover security flaws. The article does not say that GNOME has adopted his proposal.
Why it matters
People submitting code to COSMIC must write the contribution materials themselves, while GNOME users and researchers still do not know whether the project will accept AI-generated bug reports.
