Flapping Airplanes Inc. said it has closed a $1 bn funding round, bringing its post‑money valuation to about $6 bn. The money came from investors such as Index Ventures, Lux Capital, Sequoia Capital Operations and GV. The lab has not yet shipped a commercial product, but it claims to have built a “megakernel” framework that can run training, inference and a video game in a single GPU kernel, which could cut AI compute costs. Co‑founder Asher Spector said the approach could make models a million times more data‑efficient.
Why it matters
If the megakernel works as promised, companies in robotics, finance and life sciences could train AI models with far less data and cheaper hardware.
