Google has begun offering its Universal Cart tool to users in the United States. The feature appears inside the Gemini app and in Google Search’s AI Mode. It lets shoppers add products from different retailers into a single digital cart.
How Universal Cart works
When you browse with Gemini or search with AI Mode, you can click a button to save an item to the Universal Cart. The cart stores items from any site, so you don’t need separate wish lists. Google will send notifications if a saved item’s price drops or if it comes back in stock. It also looks for applicable promo codes and shows them alongside the product.
You can pay directly through Google Wallet, or you can move an item to the retailer’s own checkout page if you prefer to buy there. Google Wallet can compare the rewards and benefits of the credit cards you have saved and suggest the best one for each purchase.
What’s next
Google says it plans to link Universal Cart with Gmail and YouTube, though no timeline has been given. The rollout arrives as other companies – OpenAI, Meta and Shopify – are also building AI agents that can shop for users.
Why it matters
For everyday shoppers, Universal Cart could reduce the time spent hopping between websites and help catch discounts automatically. It also gives a single place to compare payment perks, which may save a few dollars on each purchase. How well the price‑alert and promo‑code finder works in practice remains to be seen.
