Oossa · About Oossa
Google is retiring Gems, a Gemini feature for creating custom AI assistants, and replacing them with Skills. The change takes effect on November 17, 2026, according to a notice in the Gemini app.
Google says it will move existing Gems into the new format automatically, and they will remain usable until the change. Gems launched in 2024 and let people save instructions for tasks such as planning a vacation or getting help with coding. To use a Skill, users will enter a slash in a task thread and select it.
Why it matters
People who created custom Gemini assistants should not need to rebuild them, but will need to use Google’s new Skills format.
