Linus Torvalds says he uses AI to help with coding

At the Open Source Summit Europe, Linus Torvalds explained he finds AI useful for beginners and for spotting bugs in the Linux kernel.

Linus Torvalds told interviewer Dirk Hohndel that he likes using AI to do the things he’s not good at, especially for new developers. He said AI can highlight bugs and security issues in the Linux kernel, and some maintainers now expect a review from an AI tool called Sashiko before accepting patches. Torvalds warned that AI‑generated patches can overwhelm reviewers, so they must be used carefully.

Why it matters

Developers working on Linux may need to adapt to AI‑assisted reviews, which could change how patches are submitted and accepted.
