OpenAI Says AI Agents Solved a Long-Standing Math Problem
OpenAI says thousands of AI agents produced a solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, a puzzle mathematicians have studied for decades. The result is mathematical, not an engineering breakthrough, and some researchers worry that brute-force proof-making could leave people with less understanding.
Oossa · About Oossa
The Navier-Stokes equations describe how fluids flow and help engineers model things such as airflow around airplanes. The famous math problem asks whether those equations can imply a fluid suddenly becomes infinitely disrupted under certain conditions.
OpenAI says its AI agents solved the puzzle. The Wired report says the result will not help design better airplane wings, and quotes mathematicians who see the work’s brute-force approach as a possible threat to human understanding of the ideas behind a proof.
Why it matters
AI is moving into mathematical research, raising questions about whether producing a proof is enough if people cannot follow how it was found.
