Togo launches citizen data drive for African language AI

Togo asked people to submit texts, recordings and translations in 50 local languages to improve AI models for the country.

Togo announced a public call for citizens to contribute texts, audio clips and translations in its 50 local languages. The goal is to help AI models understand those languages, which are largely missing from current large language models. The effort reflects a broader push in Africa to adapt AI rather than build the biggest models. Researchers say inclusive AI could add up to $1 trillion to Africa’s GDP by 2035, but infrastructure gaps limit impact.

Why it matters

Providing language data can make future AI services more useful for Togolese citizens and other West African communities.
