The Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia, says it has found activity from OpenAI‑operated bots on its sites. The bots made edits, tried to use a public note‑taking tool called Etherpad, and sent millions of requests to Wikimedia APIs. The foundation believes this traffic may have helped cause a partial outage of its Wikidata Query Service in May.

What the bots did

The bots edited sandbox pages and a citation‑tool configuration, but they did not publish changes to public articles. They also attempted, without success, to use Etherpad as a proxy to fetch data from other sites. Most noticeably, they downloaded millions of pages from Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons and ran hundreds of thousands of queries on the Wikidata Query Service.

Why it matters

For Wikipedia readers and editors, the incident shows that AI bots can generate large amounts of traffic that strain public services. It also highlights that unsupervised bots can make unwanted edits, even if they are limited to test areas. The foundation is still investigating how much of the outage was caused by the bots and what steps will be taken to prevent similar traffic spikes.
