1Password is introducing a feature that lets supported AI agents sign in to online accounts without revealing the passwords to the agents. Called 1Password for Agents, it asks the account owner to approve each sign-in request on their own device.
When an agent reaches a sign-in form, it uses a unique digital key to identify itself to 1Password. The app then sends a notification stating which account the agent wants to access and why. If the user approves, 1Password fills in the login details directly. The agent can continue its task without seeing or handling the password, according to the company.
Approval stays with the account owner
The process resembles two-factor authentication: the user must approve access, rather than giving the agent a password or blanket permission to all connected accounts. 1Password CEO Aashish Tripathi said the feature is intended to let agents do assigned work without permanent access to everything behind an account.
That describes a boundary around sharing credentials, but it does not mean an agent cannot take actions once it has signed in. The source does not detail what controls users have over an agent’s activity after approval, or how access can be ended.
Several agent integrations are named
1Password says the system is designed to work with Meta Muse, ChatGPT Work, Dots, Claude Duet, Grok Bot, and Town. It also lists Browserbase, Browser Use, Dana, Instinct, Kernel, Perplexity, Ramp, Tomo, and Wajo as partners working to add support.
The announcement does not give a launch date, pricing, or details about which users can access the feature. Those details will matter to people deciding whether they can use it with their preferred agent and accounts.
Why it matters
For people asking AI agents to handle tasks that require account access, this could avoid handing the agent a reusable password: 1Password says it fills in the credentials only after the user approves. It remains unclear what limits apply to the agent’s actions after sign-in, and the announcement gives no availability or pricing details.
