AMD announced a new reference design called Helion for data‑center servers that run AI workloads. The design fits a standard 21‑inch rack and can be built with just CPUs or as a complete all‑in‑one system. AMD says the CPU‑only version can contain up to 32,768 Zen 6 cores, using its 256‑core EPYC ‘Venice’ 9996 processor.
What does the Helion design include?
The reference rack follows AMD’s earlier Helios design shown at last year’s OCP Global Summit. Helion is meant to give cloud providers and enterprises a ready‑made blueprint for scaling AI compute. The company will ship the design next calendar year, offering two configurations: a dense CPU‑only layout and a pre‑integrated package that also includes networking and power components.
Why it matters
For companies that run AI models, a pre‑designed rack with that many cores could simplify scaling up compute without engineering a custom solution. It may lower hardware integration costs, but performance and pricing details are still unknown until the product ships.
