Anthropic, the AI lab behind Claude, is budgeting $750 billion to add compute capacity over the next few years. The number comes from a prospectus that the Wall Street Journal obtained while the company is gearing up for an initial public offering that could value it at $2 trillion. The spend includes “hundreds of billions in non‑cancelable deals,” meaning the company has already signed contracts that it cannot back out of.

How this compares to rivals

OpenAI, Anthropic’s closest competitor, is reportedly speeding up its own financing round to reach a valuation of $1.4 trillion, according to Reuters. Both firms are racing to build the massive infrastructure needed for large language models, a trend that has drawn warnings from investors. Citadel founder Ken Griffin said the market is “almost certainly” in a bubble, reflecting concerns that revenue growth may not match the soaring costs.

Why it matters

If Anthropic’s massive hardware spend proceeds, the cost of running advanced AI tools could rise, potentially leading to higher prices for end‑users. The race for compute also means more data‑center construction, which could affect local power grids and job markets. However, it remains unclear whether the companies’ revenues will keep pace with the spending.
