OpenAI updated its Chrome add‑on so ChatGPT can see and act on the web pages you have open, like comparing products or filling forms.

OpenAI has added a new capability to its ChatGPT Chrome extension. When the extension is installed, you can tag “Chrome” in the ChatGPT app and the model will look at the tabs you already have open. The company posted a demo where a user asks ChatGPT to compare three sofa listings that are each open in separate tabs.

The upgrade also brings a sidebar version of ChatGPT that stays on the page you’re viewing. It can use the full chat history and, in the “ChatGPT Work” mode, it can send messages, fill out forms, or download files directly from the tabs. OpenAI says the feature works similarly to Google’s Gemini “auto browse” that can organize and group tabs automatically.

How it works in practice

OpenAI lists example prompts such as: “Put the vendors in these tabs into my comparison sheet, with pricing, key features, and source links,” or “Look at all the tabs I have open and compare contractor services, then draft an email to the one that fits my home renovation.” The extension can also fill out a form you have open and add an appointment to your calendar.

Why it matters

For everyday users, the upgrade means they can ask ChatGPT to handle repetitive web tasks without copy‑pasting, saving time when shopping or filling forms. It also raises a privacy consideration: the AI will see every page you have open, so users must trust OpenAI with that data.
