ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent have reportedly committed more than $35 billion to buy Nvidia RTX Pro 5500 workstation GPUs. The three companies together ordered over 3 million of the cards. The RTX Pro 5500 is a version of Nvidia’s GPU that complies with U.S. export limits on AI‑capable hardware. Nvidia told its customers that the orders exceed its planned production capacity, so it cannot fill them at this time.
Why the shortfall matters
If the cards cannot be delivered, the Chinese firms will have to look for other hardware or wait for Nvidia to expand production. That could slow the rollout of AI projects that rely on high‑end GPUs, such as large language model training or advanced graphics work.
Why it matters
Chinese AI teams may face delays or need to find alternative hardware because Nvidia cannot meet the massive order. This could push up costs or slow development for companies that rely on these GPUs for training models or rendering graphics.
