Three U.S. nuclear plants that have been offline for years are being brought back into service. The plants – Palisades in Michigan, the Crane Clean Energy Center on the Three Mile Island site in Pennsylvania, and Duane Arnold in Iowa – together will supply about 2.25 gigawatts (GW) of power. The restart is aimed at meeting the growing electricity demand of AI data centers.

Why the restart matters

AI companies need large, steady power supplies for their servers. Adding 2.25 GW helps keep those data centers running without resorting to new fossil‑fuel plants. For consumers, the extra capacity could keep electricity prices more stable as AI workloads grow.

Why it matters

The additional nuclear power gives AI data centers a reliable, low‑carbon energy source, which can help avoid higher electricity bills for households. It also shows how existing infrastructure can be repurposed to meet new technology demands, though the long‑term impact on energy markets remains to be seen.
