Cloudflare announced that its Pay Per Use system is now in beta. The program lets publishers set a price for each time an AI product actually uses their content. AI companies can make an offer, report each use through a single API, and Cloudflare handles the billing and payments. Publishers see offers and earnings in a dashboard and can accept or reject them at any time.
How the workflow works
An AI company defines what counts as a paid use – for example, showing an excerpt in a search answer – and posts a price on Cloudflare. Publishers view the offer in the Cloudflare dashboard and choose to enroll. When the AI service uses an article, it sends a JSON line with the URL, timestamp and a request ID to Cloudflare’s usage‑report endpoint. Cloudflare aggregates the reports, charges the buyer, and pays the publisher each month.
Why this matters
Today most AI services pay only for crawling, not for the value they get from the content. Pay Per Use ties payment to actual use, which could bring more AI buyers to publishers and give creators a new revenue stream from their work.
Why it matters
For a regular website owner, this could turn otherwise free content into a paying asset whenever an AI assistant quotes or cites it. For AI developers, it offers a simpler, single‑API way to license content only when it actually improves their product, reducing upfront costs.
