EC2 Image Builder can now use Auto Scaling Group instances

AWS adds an optional feature that lets Image Builder pick already‑running EC2 instances from an Auto Scaling Group, cutting build time.

AWS announced that EC2 Image Builder can now pull instances from an existing Auto Scaling Group (ASG) when creating machine images. Instead of launching a fresh instance for each build, the service reuses a running instance, applies the build steps, and produces the image. The ASG automatically refills the pool so the next build also has a ready instance. This option is fully opt‑in and does not change any pipelines that don’t use it. The feature is live in every AWS region and carries no extra charge.

Why it matters

Developers can shorten their image‑building pipelines, saving minutes per build and reducing compute costs.
