OpenAI told investors on Thursday that it is close to finalising a new funding round. The deal could bring in as much as $30 billion and would put the company’s value at about $1.25 trillion. The capital is being raised as an “opportunistic” bridge before a planned initial public offering, which the company’s CFO says is likely to happen in 2027.

Who is backing the round?

Investors from the United Arab Emirates are leading the round, working alongside the venture firm Coatue. The source says the final amount and the exact list of participants are still being worked out. OpenAI also mentioned a separate commercial agreement that could give it more computing power from the UAE, a move that would help the company scale its AI services.

What does this mean for the market?

The fundraising comes at a time when tech markets are volatile, with rising interest rates and recent jitters around other AI companies. By securing a large cash cushion, OpenAI hopes to weather those conditions and keep expanding its products, such as ChatGPT, without needing to rush an IPO.

Why it matters

If the round closes, OpenAI will have a large cash reserve to invest in faster computers and new features for its products, keeping them available and improving performance for everyday users. The funding also signals strong investor confidence, which could influence the timing and price of its eventual stock market debut. However, the exact terms and final size of the round remain unclear.
