Bob McGrew, former head of research at OpenAI, launched Arda to use AI for faster manufacturing. The startup just closed a $230 million financing led by Altimeter Capital, Accel and Khosla Ventures, giving it a $1.5 billion valuation. Arda’s software lets engineers re‑tool assembly lines in days instead of months, and its models are already running at defense firm Anduril. McGrew says the next step is adding robotics to further automate U.S. factories.

Why it matters

If the AI tools deliver, U.S. manufacturers could cut redesign time dramatically, making domestic production more viable and potentially creating jobs.
