Former OpenAI engineer ordered detained in spying case

A US judge denied release for Abdulrahman Alfozan, accused of secretly recording OpenAI meetings. Prosecutors cite travel plans and a phone folder labeled “Saudi Gov Docs.”

A US magistrate judge ordered former OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan held while he faces charges related to secretly recording meetings at the company. The FBI says his iPhone contained a folder called “Saudi Gov Docs” and photos of recording devices; prosecutors allege he also communicated with a Saudi royal family member.

Prosecutors argue Alfozan is a flight risk, citing a one-way ticket to Riyadh they say the Saudi government paid for and the fact that his wife and child have left the US. The government has not publicly said what was in the folder, and the allegations do not establish that Alfozan acted for Saudi Arabia.

Why it matters

OpenAI employees and government partners may face added security concerns, but the contents of the folder and whether Alfozan acted for a foreign government remain unknown.
