Google detector flags Trump’s White House column photo as AI-edited

A Truth Social photo comparing a White House column before and after restoration was flagged by Google’s SynthID Detector. The White House had not commented.

President Donald Trump posted photos of White House renovations on Truth Social, including a before-and-after image of a column. Google’s SynthID Detector flagged that image as “created or edited” with AI and identified OpenAI; The Verge reported that the detector found an invisible watermark.

The image has mismatched steps and near-identical details in the two views, despite the supposed restoration. Separate photos showed people painting the White House exterior in June, so the column may have been repainted; the White House had not responded to The Verge’s request for comment.

Why it matters

For people judging the renovation from Trump’s post, the flagged image is not reliable evidence of the column’s final appearance; whether it was actually repainted remains unclear.
