HiRO-ACEv2 lets researchers generate 3 km climate data far cheaper

The new model from Allen Institute and Hugging Face reproduces rare rain, wind and pressure events at 3 km resolution for about 1/300 the cost of the X‑SHiELD simulator.

Allen Institute and Hugging Face released HiRO-ACEv2, an update to their climate‑emulation system. The downscaling model now predicts rainfall, wind and pressure together and matches X‑SHiELD’s extreme‑event statistics within 3 %. A full year of global 3 km data can be produced for roughly 300 times less money than running X‑SHiELD, and even larger savings when only a region is needed.

Why it matters

Researchers can study decades of high‑resolution extreme weather without the huge computing budgets previously required.
