Nvidia has reportedly told data center operators to limit how much of their business comes from Chinese companies. Under the reported policy, Chinese customers could account for no more than 49% of an operator’s overall business; at least 51% would need to come from non-Chinese outfits.

Tom’s Hardware reports that the Financial Times says Nvidia’s sales force and regional teams communicated the policy to customers. The report describes it as a new global restriction, but Nvidia has not apparently set it out in official documentation. That means the details available so far come from what customers were reportedly told, rather than a published policy spelling out its terms.

What operators would have to track

If applied as reported, the limit would require data center operators serving Chinese companies to keep track of the share of their overall business those customers represent. A customer mix at 49% Chinese and 51% non-Chinese would meet the stated threshold; a larger Chinese share would exceed it. The report does not explain how Nvidia defines “business,” or how operators are expected to calculate the split.

The reported rule concerns the companies buying services from data center operators, rather than a specific Nvidia product or a stated limit on chip purchases. The account does not say whether Nvidia would assess operators individually, what evidence it would require, or what consequences might follow if an operator exceeded the threshold.

The policy’s terms are not public

Nvidia’s reported use of sales and regional teams to convey the restriction suggests that customers have been given guidance directly. But without a formal document, operators and their customers cannot tell from the information reported how the rule would work in edge cases, or whether it applies in the same way to every data center customer.

The 49% figure is the clearest detail available, but it does not answer how the company would verify compliance or handle changes in an operator’s customer mix. Those points remain unreported.

Why it matters

Data center operators that serve Chinese companies may need to monitor the share of their business those customers represent and keep it below the reported 50% threshold. The reporting does not explain how Nvidia defines or checks that share, so the practical compliance steps remain unclear.
