The New York Times rolled out a beta feature in its Cooking app that lets paying users ask an AI to change ingredients, equipment or dietary details in a recipe. The tool appears as a “customize this recipe” field above the ingredient list and shows any changes in red‑orange text. It draws on the Times’ own substitution guide, user comments and a large language model – the kind of AI behind ChatGPT. The feature is limited to iOS for now and can be hidden in the app settings.
Why it matters
Home cooks can avoid extra grocery trips by instantly tailoring recipes to what they have on hand.
