Reflection AI announced its first model, Beam, on October 5, 2026. The New York‑based startup says Beam is a “workhorse” that outperforms other Western open models, especially at coding and agentic tasks. CEO Misha Laskin told Semafor the model needs three to four times less computing power to solve a problem, making it cheaper and faster to run.
How Beam compares to other models
Beam’s capabilities are said to be similar to China’s Z.ai GLM‑5.2, released in June 2026, and it is “approaching” the performance of Alibaba’s Qwen 3.8‑Max, which still lags behind closed‑source models from OpenAI and Anthropic. The company is targeting businesses, governments and other groups that want to build sovereign AI systems without relying on Chinese models.
Future plans
Reflection AI is already training a successor to Beam, which Laskin described as “much more” powerful and performant. The startup sees a market for entities that need open‑source AI they can control and secure.
Why it matters
For companies that need to keep AI workloads in‑house, Beam offers a cheaper, faster open‑source alternative that doesn’t rely on Chinese technology. It could reduce reliance on costly licensed models while still delivering strong coding assistance. However, it remains to be seen how Beam will perform on a wider range of tasks and whether it meets security expectations.
