Ting‑Wei “Willy” Sun, a third‑party broker tied to Super Micro, has pleaded guilty to helping ship Nvidia AI chips to China. The chips were hidden in Super Micro servers that were sent to a Thai company, then to Alibaba, which says it never received the hardware. Investigators say workers used hair dryers to erase serial numbers and swap the real servers into dummy shells. Sun’s plea is part of a deal with prosecutors, but the terms are not public.
He will be sentenced on Sept. 8, 2027. The case also involves Super Micro co‑founder Yih‑Shyan “Wally” Liaw and sales manager Ruei‑Tsang “Steven” Chang, who face charges for the same scheme.
Why it matters
The guilty plea shows how export‑control rules on advanced AI hardware are being enforced, warning other suppliers about the risks of illicit shipments.
