Thrive Holdings has acquired physical security company ADT in a deal valued at $15.3 billion, the companies announced on October 29, 2026. The agreed price is $10 per share, or about $7.6 billion in equity, while ADT put the deal’s total enterprise value at $15.3 billion. The companies did not provide a breakdown of the difference between those figures.

Thrive Holdings is a private-equity firm spun out of Thrive Capital, the venture capital firm founded by Josh Kushner. It counts OpenAI as both a partner and an investor. Thrive says it owns more than 75 companies and aims to hold businesses for the long term while helping them use AI. OpenAI supplies models, technology and forward-deployed engineers—staff who work with companies on applying the technology—to Thrive’s businesses.

What will change for ADT customers?

The companies have not announced any specific AI-powered security products, features or release dates. Their stated plan is to invest in ADT and release new products, with ADT forming the foundation of Thrive Holdings’ smart home security business. That leaves open what customers might eventually be able to buy, and whether any new service would change ADT’s existing offerings or prices.

For people who already use ADT, the announcement does not describe an immediate change to their service. It also does not say how OpenAI’s tools or staff will be used in security products, or whether any future features would process video or other customer data with AI. Those details will matter to customers deciding whether to use new products, but the companies have not provided them.

A crowded smart home market

The deal comes as major technology companies are adding AI features to home security products. TechCrunch points to Apple’s entry into the field with smart home and security products developed with LG and Schneider Electric, and Amazon’s updates to its smart home range, including AI-powered home cameras. Some startups are also working on robot dogs that patrol as security guards.

Thrive’s purchase gives it an established security company to build on, rather than announcing a new security startup or a product customers can try today. But the announcement does not establish that AI will make ADT’s security more effective, or explain how any new products would compare with those from Apple or Amazon. For now, the confirmed change is ownership and Thrive’s stated intention to invest and develop products; the consumer impact depends on what it releases next.

Why it matters

For ADT customers, the deal could eventually bring new smart home security products, but no product, release date or price has been announced. The immediate confirmed change is Thrive Holdings’ ownership of ADT; what customers will notice remains unknown.
