Apple has begun beta testing four “Audio Intelligence” features for the Apple Watch, including tools to replay a short stretch of conversation and create brief meeting-style notes. The features are initially available to developers through the iOS 27.3 update, TechCrunch reports. Apple has not given a date for a public release.

The tools are for Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. The other two features identify sounds such as sirens, alarms and doorbells, and use Shazam to name music playing nearby. Apple says the sound alerts could help deaf and hard-of-hearing users.

How do the conversation tools work?

Live Rewind lets a wearer double-press the Digital Crown to see a text snippet of what was said in the previous 15 seconds. The Watch plays a chime and shows an animation when the feature is activated. The wearer can save a snippet to the Siri app; otherwise, it disappears, and unsaved snippets are automatically deleted after 30 seconds.

Siri Recaps creates a short summary and bullet points with details such as dates, deadlines or prices. Apple says it does not identify speakers, keep the raw audio or produce a word-for-word transcript. Users can switch recapping off, set a schedule, and review the saved recaps at the end of the day. Recaps can be saved in Notes or exported to Journal; if left unsaved, they are deleted within seven days. The feature does not record while the wearer is listening to music with headphones or using noise cancellation.

What happens to the audio?

Apple says the Watch detects conversation using its S11 chip, then sends audio to the paired iPhone for processing. The condensed text used to make a recap is encrypted before it goes to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute service, which Apple says deletes the recap and related summaries immediately after processing. Apple also says the audio is protected in a secure area and is not accessible to the company. It says the features should not affect Watch or iPhone battery life.

The developer beta is an early test, not general availability. Apple says it plans to offer a public beta before making the features available to everyone, but has not announced when that will happen.

Why it matters

For Watch owners who miss a spoken direction or need to remember a meeting deadline, Live Rewind and Siri Recaps offer ways to retrieve or condense that information without taking notes by hand. The tools are still in developer beta, so most users cannot rely on them yet, and Apple has not said when they will be generally available.
