Netflix builds unified observability layer to cut incident resolution time

Netflix's observability team created a single data layer that merges logs, metrics, events and traces, aiming to reduce debugging effort and improve user experience.

Netflix observability engineers Prasanna Vijayanathan and Renzo Sanchez‑Silva explained their new ontology‑driven system. It merges the four main telemetry types—metrics, events, logs and traces—into one “MELT” layer. The goal is to let alerts automatically prioritize, route to the right team and even suggest root causes, instead of the current manual, multi‑team process that can take hours.

Why it matters

A unified observability layer could shrink incident response from hours to minutes, keeping Netflix streams smoother for viewers.
