AWS says OpenAI GPT-6.1 Terra is generally available on Amazon Bedrock. The model joins the GPT-6 family and is designed for everyday workloads that need a balance of capability, speed and cost, according to AWS. Teams can call it through Bedrock APIs or configure ChatGPT Work and Codex to use it through Bedrock.

GPT-6.1 Terra accepts text and images and has a context window of up to 1 million input tokens. A context window is the amount of material a model can take into account at once. AWS lists examples including drafting proposals, interpreting technical drawings, investigating codebases and building agents that work across business systems. The announcement does not give specific regional availability or prices; AWS directs customers to its Bedrock documentation for those details.

What does AWS say has improved?

AWS describes GPT-6.1 Terra as offering detailed visual reasoning, computer use, improved factuality and more natural writing compared with GPT-5.6 Terra. It also reports results from OpenAI’s Agents’ Last Exam evaluation: Terra scored 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra, performed on par with GPT-6 Astra, and completed tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

Those are vendor-reported results. AWS does not provide the evaluation setup or a breakdown of the tasks in its announcement, so the figures do not show how the models compare on every kind of work. The announcement also gives no independent test results.

How does the pricing compare?

AWS says GPT-6.1 Terra’s input and output token prices are at least 50% lower than GPT-6.1 Sol’s and GPT-5.6 Terra’s. It does not state the prices themselves, so customers will need to check Bedrock’s pricing information to estimate the cost of a particular workload.

AWS says Bedrock’s existing controls can help customers secure workloads, manage access and audit model calls. These are Bedrock platform features, rather than a separate control set described specifically for Terra. Availability through Bedrock also means the announcement is aimed at organizations using AWS services; it does not describe a direct public ChatGPT release.

Why it matters

For organizations already using Amazon Bedrock, Terra adds a model they can call through Bedrock APIs or connect to ChatGPT Work and Codex, with AWS reporting lower token prices than two named alternatives. The actual cost, supported regions and performance on a team's own tasks still need to be checked; AWS does not publish those details in the announcement.
