A new poll commissioned by the American Infrastructure Alliance found Americans are split on AI data centers. Nationwide, 58% say they oppose building a data center in their state. However, 54% would change their mind if companies promise to pay for the electricity used, shield consumers from higher utility bills and protect local environmental resources. Still, 31% remain opposed outright. The poll also notes that 70% fear a ban could give China more control over US information infrastructure.
Why it matters
If AI firms adopt these guardrails, they could win public support and move ahead with data center projects that create local jobs.
