The U.S. Senate has finished a year‑long investigation into AI data centers. The report says some developers have overstated the community benefits of their projects. They frequently cite the number of construction jobs created, but they do not disclose how many permanent positions remain once the center is running.

What the numbers look like

Only a few companies provided permanent‑job figures. Those that did said they hire roughly one full‑time employee for every megawatt of capacity. A 100‑megawatt data center – enough electricity to power about 100,000 homes – would therefore employ about 100 people on an ongoing basis.

Why it matters

For residents near proposed AI data centers, the promise of long‑term jobs may be smaller than advertised. Knowing the likely permanent staffing levels helps communities weigh economic benefits against other impacts, such as increased electricity use and local traffic.
