A team led by Aaron J. Li released TokenEconomizer, a black‑box controller that monitors AI coding agents and trims wasteful token spend. It decides which micro‑skills to add, which tools to drop, and when to step in during failing loops. Tested with Claude Code, Codex and the GitHub Copilot CLI, the system lowered average token usage by 18.4‑30.9% without hurting task success. Savings also appeared in sequential web‑development and security‑audit projects, dropping costs 6.4‑21.2%.
Why it matters
Developers can spend less on API usage when using AI assistants for large codebases.
