Event date:

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said Boom Supersonic’s Overture airliner will not be ready by the company’s 2029 target. In an interview published October 28, he said the project still faces hurdles to development and FAA certification, and that overcoming them is not guaranteed.

Boom is also developing natural-gas turbines for AI data centers. It says it plans to deliver the first units in mid-2027, but lost a $1.25 billion deal with data center developer Crusoe. Boom says it expects to deliver about 250 megawatts of turbines to other sites next year, without naming those customers.

Why it matters

Airlines considering Boom’s Overture should treat the 2029 delivery target as uncertain: United’s CEO expects a delay, though the eventual schedule remains unknown.
