Character.ai announced on Oct 13 2026 that it has filed for bankruptcy and is being put up for sale. The company says a buyer must be found by early December 2026, or the service will be shut down. Until a deal is reached, the platform and existing subscriptions will keep running.

Who is buying and why the company fell

Disney has agreed to purchase some of Character.ai’s assets for $20 million, including a perpetual, non‑exclusive license to the technology. Former Character.ai staff who moved to Disney last month with ex‑CEO Karandeep Singh Anand will help with the transition. The bankruptcy filing follows lawsuits over alleged harm to children, regulatory pressure, and internal operational problems, including a tragic incident involving a teenager’s suicide.

Background on the 2024 Google deal

In 2024 Google paid $2.7 billion to acquire Character.ai, mainly to bring back co‑founder Noam Shazeer, a co‑author of Google’s Transformer paper that underlies most modern AI models. Shazeer and co‑founder Daniel De Freitas were expected to improve Google’s reasoning models. By 2026 Shazeer had left Google for OpenAI, reportedly because of “compute bureaucracy,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

Why it matters

If no buyer is found, users of Character.ai will lose access to their chat accounts after December 2026. Existing subscribers will see their payments stop without receiving the service. The sale to Disney could mean the technology lives on in other Disney products, but the current platform will disappear.
