Geoffrey Vos, who is retiring as Master of the Rolls, says AI could eventually decide some lower-value civil cases, including personal injury claims. He says complex commercial disputes and family cases should remain under human judgment, while stressing that any move to AI decisions needs public consent or legislation.
Vos told WIRED that he uses Microsoft Copilot to find documents and summarize material, but not to write judgments. He also said county court cases are rising by 10 percent a year; he thinks AI-generated claims may contribute, though he said there is no data on how many are legally sound.
Why it matters
People bringing lower-value civil claims could eventually face machine-made decisions, but Vos says the public and lawmakers—not judges alone—must decide whether that is acceptable.
