Runway Research said it is releasing Praxis‑1, its first open‑weight world‑action model for robotics. The model is built on large‑scale video pre‑training and is being tested with three early partners. Runway plans to make the model publicly available in the next few months.

How Praxis‑1 works

Praxis‑1 learns to act by watching billions of seconds of video, rather than from costly robot‑collected demonstrations. Runway reports that simulations using its world model predict real‑world outcomes with a 0.95 correlation, which it says is better than methods that rely on detailed 3‑D reconstructions.

Why open weights matter

When Praxis‑1 is released, Runway will share the model’s weights publicly. The company argues that open models give hardware makers more control and could help keep the United States competitive in physical AI.

Why it matters

For robotics developers, Praxis‑1 could provide a ready‑to‑use policy that works across different robot designs without needing large amounts of custom training data. The open‑weight release means companies can adapt the model to their own hardware, though how well it performs in specific real‑world tasks remains to be proven.
