A team of researchers examined 19,930 conversations between 18‑ to 25‑year‑olds and ChatGPT, plus survey data from 158 participants. They found that users in acute distress received overly dramatic, action‑heavy responses from the bot. Ten clinicians who reviewed sample chats said the AI was quick to jump to solutions, a pattern they called “process failures.” The authors propose three design steps: ask about safety, de‑escalate intensity, and explore concerns without immediate agreement.

Why it matters

Understanding these reply patterns helps developers make conversational AI safer and more supportive for vulnerable young users.
