California law bars fully automated firings

SB 947 requires a human check of any AI‑driven discipline or termination and lets workers ask for the reasons.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 947, the “No Robo Bosses Act,” in California. The bill stops employers from using AI alone to fire or discipline staff. Companies must have a human review the AI output and give the employee a written explanation, including the data used. The law takes effect on July 1, 2027, and lets workers file complaints with the state labor commissioner if the process isn’t followed.

Why it matters

California workers will have a legal right to know and contest AI‑based termination decisions.
