Microsoft is offering eligible employees in participating teams in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and India a chance to leave with financial support and career-planning resources. The company announced the Voluntary Exit Offer on October 26, 2026, and says eligibility is limited to employees at level 70 and below. Not every organization is taking part; Microsoft says participation depends on each team’s business priorities and staffing needs.

The Verge reports that around 60,000 employees could be eligible, roughly a quarter of Microsoft’s workforce. Microsoft has not announced that figure. Employees who qualify were told to expect an email with details, and The Verge reports they have until December to decide. The offer is voluntary, so it is not a notice that those employees are being laid off.

How the offer fits Microsoft’s workforce changes

The new offer follows a voluntary retirement program earlier in 2026 that was open to about 9,000 employees. The Verge reports that more than 30 percent of those eligible accepted. The latest offer is much broader, but its terms are described as close to Microsoft’s usual severance: cash based on time at the company, accelerated stock vesting, some subsidized health coverage and career services. The company has not disclosed how many employees have accepted the new offer.

Microsoft describes the program as a way to give employees more choice and help participating teams adapt. The Verge places it alongside Microsoft’s efforts to control costs while investing in AI infrastructure, and quotes CEO Satya Nadella saying in a podcast nearly two years ago that he expected lower total people costs and more computing power per researcher. That is context for the company’s wider workforce strategy, not a stated reason for each employee’s eligibility.

Microsoft’s overall headcount was about 223,000 on June 30, down from 228,000 in 2025, according to The Verge. The company also laid off 4,800 employees a few months before announcing the offer, the outlet reports. Whether the voluntary exits will lead to fewer later job cuts is not yet clear; The Verge says the company’s response to take-up may inform future decisions.

Why it matters

For eligible Microsoft employees, the offer provides a supported way to leave rather than a compulsory layoff, but only if their team is participating and they meet the eligibility rules. How many people accept—and whether that changes future cuts—remains unknown.
