HackerRank is rolling out Chakra, an AI‑driven interview agent, to all its paying customers on Monday. The tool acts as both interviewer and observer, watching candidates work on real code and asking follow‑up questions. It also produces a detailed report for hiring managers.

During the beta, Chakra ran more than half a million mock interviews for companies like Snowflake, Snorkel and Capgemini. The startup says the AI can judge not only the final answer but also how candidates think, judge AI output and steer problem‑solving. HackerRank positions Chakra as a replacement for the three‑step hiring process that usually includes a recruiter screen, a take‑home test and a live interview.

How the AI changes the interview flow

In a Chakra interview, candidates receive a task tied to an actual code repository and work in a canvas that includes an AI assistant. As they code, Chakra uses the context to ask why a particular approach was chosen or how a solution would change under new constraints. After the session, hiring managers get a score and a narrative of the candidate’s reasoning.

HackerRank reports that suspicious‑activity flags dropped by 70%‑80% compared with traditional assessments, suggesting that giving candidates AI help reduces the urge to use hidden cheat tools. The company stresses that final hiring decisions remain with humans, with the AI only providing consistent scoring.

Why it matters

For job candidates, Chakra means a single, AI‑assisted interview that may feel more like actual work and could lower the risk of being flagged for cheating. For hiring teams, the AI offers a consistent way to score problem‑solving and judgment, freeing recruiters to focus on cultural fit and team questions.
